Annoying anti-spam methods
Why people can’t just stick with Akismet is a mystery to me. Yes I get a few comments in moderation when they shouldn’t be but nothing compared to the 19k it has blocked over the last year. Usually just re-checking the moderation queue cleans it right up.
Anyhow - I was trying to get a Wordpress plugin setup right, Subscribe To Comments. There are a couple of problems with it, as noted in the comments thread there already. I thought i’d leave a comment and subscribe so at least I might get some updates on it before I condemn it to “The Bin Full Of Crap I’ve Downloaded That Just Doesn’t Work: Population > 500″. Let’s look at what happened..
After submitting my comment, I get a nice 403 page.
Quite intriguing as i’ve had this exact same IP address for well over 3 years with ZERO problems at all. Anyway, whatever, maybe a false positve. That link to ‘fix the problem yourself’ should do the trick shouldn’t it?
No Blacklist Reason? Interesting.
What I do notice though is that this page has a nice bit of Google Adsense referrer code chucked in there. So, is this just a ruse that this page puts ALL commenters through in the hope of driving the less knowledgeable to install the Google Pack?
I’ll give posting from one (or a few if I have the time) of the US office networks tomorrow. In the meantime I emailed the guy but judging by his lack of response on the comment thread, my breath isn’t held. (Disclaimer: There are 31 pages of comments on there but you can’t get to pages 2 through 20 without updating the URL in situ - i’m too lazy for that at 02:00 hrs).
